Bangladesh’s Interim Government Shifts Stance on Myanmar

A Realpolitik Recalibration of the Rohingya Crisis?

Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, is signaling a shift in its approach to Myanmar’s ongoing crisis. Unlike previous administrations, Hossain has openly acknowledged past policy failures, including the rushed 2017 Rohingya repatriation agreement, while also advocating for controversial engagement with the Arakan Army (AA)—a group that now controls much of Rakhine State.

This recalibration raises critical questions: What does it mean for Rohingya refugees? Is Bangladesh prioritising regional diplomacy over Rohingya welfare? And how does this strategy align with Bangladesh' tacit approval of military-aligned Rohingya armed groups operating in the camps?

In my recent piece for DVB English, I explore these shifting dynamics, examining Bangladesh’s evolving realpolitik, its engagement with Myanmar’s conflict, and the humanitarian implications of its policies.
